Temptation Distraction Concentration and a Disciplined Mind !

Today I am about to pen down experiences which we all must have encountered in one way or the other during this journey called life. Certainly when we look down the memory lane, sometimes need is felt to edit those happenings or the way we had dealt a particular incident !.. Thoughts in your mind might be as I said or even the thoughts of not being able to be the person which you once lived in your mind do creep in.

Lots and lots of thoughts are coming floating tossing and vanishing, creating the ripples in our own minds..why... Sometimes a family member is late in reaching home, may be from market, and again thoughts mostly negative do creep in, why ?

Sometimes you are trying to focus on a problem & are not getting a proper solution ! This worsens when you yourself are the only person who is guiding your own self. Who is guiding you ? your own wisdom, your own intellect, suppose there are two or three ways of dealing a particular situation, you choose one way but yes there had been a better way of handling the same situation. Did you deliberately  not handle the best way ! obviously not, you tried your level best but your wisdom , your intellect could  only take you to the point where you have reached and have reacted ! Right !! or can I put it in other words that wisdom has not been used to its full extent and yes if even used to full extent, it is having its own limitations of intellectual capability.

If this be the case, and every one could deal a particular situation in the best way, certainly everyone would have been like Swami Vivekananda ! Indeed yes, whats the harm, what is limiting us, if we cant be Swami Vivekananda, trying to come closer to him is in fact desirous.. A positive change indeed.

Now lets move to basic things why do this happen that we regret an incident, action of ours, after the same has happened. It could be scolding a child, emotional outburst, gust of anger on a colleague, friend, stranger, any thing of this sort !..The reason, our action is governed by our senses and not by our mind..I shall explain it further ...

We all human beings are gifted by senses of taste, touch, sight, smell & hearing. These five senses are certainly supreme to our body but are inferior to our wisdom (disciplined mind). I am deliberately using the word disciplined mind and not only 'mind'. Disciplined mind is wisdom, undisciplined mind in nothing but a distraction, a constant source of temptation.

Someone just uttered a bad word about us, our hearing sense immediately strings the body in action and we slap the person in no time or react with a more abusive language.
What happened, its the sense which controlled mind, its the sense which made the body react and not the wisdom!.. On seeing a beautiful lady, thoughts which are not descent enter our mind, may provoke to touch or talk to lady.. ! why senses again overwhelm wisdom or did not abide to wisdom.. result destruction or a shameful incident.
On looking a person unknowingly dropping a gold chain , thoughts of picking the chain and running away with it come, again senses rule !... Numerous examples are there...

Shall move towards the ones which we encounter in daily lives.. Students are trying to study and concentrate, on hearing some music which is being played in adjacent room, thoughts of watching the movie creep in, and concentration gets shattered.. In a house, when an elder shouts , impulsive thoughts creep in.. we act lot of times and our actions are governed by senses not wisdom..

Lot of decisions have to be taken in life, some are significant some are not that much significant. Purchasing a fridge could be an example. Looks of Fridge 'A' excite eyes, its aesthetics are too fancy to say No. But specification of Fridge 'B' are marginally superior to fridge 'A'. What will you do, you have kids & wife with you who want fridge 'A'. You know fridge 'B' is technically superior but of course marginally. Wisdom says fridge 'B' should be purchased without any second thought but why this much time is being taken to decide such a small situation !

So the distraction, temptation in life is on account of these five senses. We all are bound by these senses and these senses are even responsible for making us enjoy life.. The fact remains, these have to be controlled & channelled ... controlled by whom...controlled by disciplined mind..! Controlled by wisdom..

Similarly in life some important decisions which are lot more than purchasing a fridge have to be taken, which shape the life itself..such decisions can only be taken by having a disciplined mind and good wisdom.

Now how do we gain wisdom, how the change  will happen, Will it happen overnight ?, certainly not..! its always resisted .. The only way to gain wisdom is to establish control of wisdom over senses, this can be done through art of concentration. The way to achieve concentration is meditation. Almost every suffering (which relates to mind) has only one cure that is 'concentration through meditation'. Meditation refines the thinking ability, makes one more focused,   makes ones thinking more rational and unselfish. Meditation is the way of life..its Hindutava..

Now we learnt wisdom should govern and guide senses, who should govern wisdom (disciplined mind)...its the soul...our own inner voice...it lies deep within..once we start listening to wisdom, we will begin to hear feeble voice of soul..ultimately soul will guide wisdom..and its the supreme soul who will guide our own soul...This beautiful and organised way will lead to a more prosperous us, more rational logical us..more rational logical society..more rational logical India...more rational logical world...

Lets start not to be carried away by our senses (distractions) ..lets start not to be carried away by temptations.. It is too hard to establish this channelled control but believe once done...it will give satisfaction..it will show an enlightened path..a path towards a beautiful life..

I had read somewhere and re iterating those lines --

Temptation in itself is not a sin..It becomes a sin when one yields to it...
It knocks the door of the house begging to be let in...But once you allow it to enter, it stays as the master of the house !!

Bhagwad Gita rightly says...

indriyaani paranyaahurindriyebhyaha param manaha |
manasastu paraa buddhiryo buddheh paratastu saha || 42 ||

It is said that the senses are superior (than the body), the mind is
superior than the senses, the intellect are superior than the mind,
and that (the eternal essence) is superior than the intellect.

Jai Shri Krishna.. !! Hare Krishna !!

  2. Thank You Kailash for presenting in sequence how distractions and emotions affect us if the Mind is not tamed.

Yes!! The external world cannot be managed unless one fixes themselves internally through self-discipline particularly the Mind. The wavering of the mind influenced by the five senses can be controlled by increasing the concentration power through meditation.

  3. It's amazing... relatable... especially the para where you explain how senses overwhelm wisdom again n again. Yes, this is exactly what happens and it is really hard to control, even when you try your best, you fail several times....

I look forward to reading more on this... :-)
